Rengma people opposes the proposal for Kuki Regional Autonomous Council

Kohima, February 28 (NEx): The much hyped visit of the Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah to Assam has come as a big surprise when a proposal was put up by the Assam government to create Kuki Regional Autonomous Council to appease the Kuki militants which created unpleasant situation in the Rengma Naga Hills of Assam and certain to collide with the interest of the original indigenous inhabitants, the Rengma people.

The Kilonser & Supremo, Naga Rengma Hills National Workers, Joseph Rengma in a press release said that the Rengma National Workers have taken a strong exception to this unjustified proposal, and this will certainly heat up the political climate in Rengma Hills as Rengma people will never allow Kuki Regional Autonomous Council to be set up in their lands.

“We are also particularly against the memorandum submitted by Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi- Anglong Shri Tuliram Ronghang to the Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah to implement Article 244 (A) to upgrade to the level of statehood”, he said, adding that this is totally not in the interest of the son of the soil.

The Kilonser also stared that the Assam government and the center should not take hasty decision, lest more problems crop up. The interest of Kukis or Karbis should not be allowed to override the interest of the Rengma people as history clearly defined the political rights of the Rengma people in the Rengma Naga Hills, he said.

Further, he mentioned that when history is not respected, revolutionary uprising follows, as witnessed across the other parts of the world. This is the natural repercussion when wrong is done to the people whose historical and political rights are willfully denied.
