Kohima, June 06 (NEx): A huge mob of locals is said to have surrounded Assam Rifles post and resorted to unprovoked violence and arson. The mob torched two Assam Rifles vehicles and caused damage to the Assam Rifles post near Chalwa village, Kangpokpi in Manipur, the PRO Kohima informed.
The PRO informed that based on specific intelligence, Security Forces launched an operation on the night of June 4th, 2021 to nab Secretary of KRA along with 3-4 cadres in Kangpokpi District, Manipur.
The Security Forces approached to make an inquiry when the KRA cadres and their accomplices manhandled one of the Assam Rifles personnel and attempted to fire on the troops. Sensing the imminent danger and threat to life, the party reacted using minimum force, the PRO said.
While the operation was in progress, a huge mob of locals surrounded the Assam Rifles post and resorted to unprovoked violence and arson. The mob torched two Assam Rifles vehicles and caused damage to the Assam Rifles post at Gelnel village. They also disrupted the main road connectivity for more than 24 hours causing lots of inconvenience to local commuters, the report said.
The Security Forces said that it exercised total restraint to control the unruly mob with special consideration towards safety of human life and collateral damage and also informed that Indian Army has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Further, the Assam Rifles affirmed that it remains committed to maintaining peace and normalcy in the region.
