Kohima, August 31 (NEx): Former President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee breathed his last today as informed by his son Abhijit Mukherjee through his twitter handle.

Abhijit Mukherjee said in his tweets, ‘With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India!’- unquote.

He also tweeted earlier in the afternoon that his father’s condition is critical and had urged all his friends to pray.

The former President on August 10th informed that, he had tested positive for COVID-19.

‘On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID19 today.
I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19’COVID-19’, tweets Pranab Mukherjee.

Internet sources informed that the former President passed away after a brain clot surgery. It was not ascertained as to whether the cause of death was due to COVID-19.

Pranab Mukherjee was an Indian politician who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017. In a political career spanning five decades, Mukherjee has been a senior leader in the INC and has occupied several ministerial portfolios in the Government of India. Before being elected as the president, Mukherjee was the Union Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012. He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 2019 by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with others expressed shock and condoles the demise of the former president.

The PM tweets, ‘India grieves the passing away of Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation. A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society’.

The incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind tweets, ‘Sad to hear that former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee is no more. His demise is passing of an era. A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens’.
