Wokha Town bans single-use plastics with immediate effect

Dimapur: The Wokha Town Council has announced ban on single-use plastic bags below 50 microns of thickness, and cutleries, cups, plates made of single-use plastic, Styrofoam, thermocol with immediate effect.

According to a DIPR report on Monday, the decision was taken during a meeting among colony/ward representatives, GBs, church leaders, NGOs and the ADC and administrator of WTC.

It also decided to allow traders to dispose off their acquired stock of 200 ml and 100 ml packaged drinking water. “No business may henceforth buy, stock or distribute such items, the penalty for violating the above order shall be INR 2000 for the first offence and INR 5000 for subsequent offence,” read the report.

For alternative means, members of 10 self-help groups (SHG) and Team Metamorphosis, an NGO, are being trained on paper bag making. Also, the Lotha Ekoe Hoho has been tasked with making carry bags from clothes, it reported.
