Vaccine alone costs Rs 64 cr to vaccinate citizens of age group 18-44: CM Rio

Kohima, April 30 (NEx): The total cost for the vaccine alone at the announced price for COVISHIELD is estimated to be Rs. 64 crore, to cover the free vaccination drive for citizens of age group 18-44 in Nagaland, stated Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Earlier, Nagaland Government has decided to vaccinate all citizens above 18-years free of cost from May 01, 2021. The decision was taken during the State Cabinet meeting held at Kohima on April 27th, 2021, informed Government Spokesperson and Advisor IT&C, Mmhonlumo Kikon.

Nagaland has an estimated population of 8 lakh citizens in the age group of 18-44. The State government needs 16 lakh doses of vaccine to complete two dose COVID vaccination drive for the said age group.

The total cost for the vaccine alone at the announced price for COVISHIELD is estimated to be Rs. 64 crore, this was stated in a letter from Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to President, Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

‘Rs 64 crore for the vaccine alone would be a burden on the already stretched State finances of our small state,’ stated the CM. The Chief Minister was seeking support from Industrialists to procure vaccine for the free vaccination drive for the residents of the State of age group 18-44 years.

Further, the Chief Minister requested, the companies or any individuals who wish to stand together to fight against COVID with the people of Nagaland, may contribute directly to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, or in any other manner convenient for the vaccination drive.
