Kohima, October 2: State Level Programme on Kohima Smart City Mission; Swacch Bharat Mission and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was held at NBCC Convention Hall, Kohima, today (October 2, 2019)
Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, in his address, said urban areas are centres of economic activities and engines of growth and are crucial to the economy of a State for poverty alleviation and inclusive growth. He advocated that climate change perspectives have to be integrated within the broader framework of sustainable urban development, and a holistic approach to participatory governance, urban environmental planning and management.
He further informed that the Government of India has launched various missions such as the Smart City Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Housing for All (HFA-Urban) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) to address the problems of the urban areas.
CM Rio said “Kohima was selected as one of the 100 smart cities on 20th September 2016. Implementation of projects have begun in full swing and we are currently ranked 1st among the 10 North East Smart Cities.” He added that under this project, Kohima, along with the smart cities in the country, launched the 100-day Smart City Special Initiative Campaign on Sanitation focussing on Awareness Creation on Plastic Pollution and Waste Management with special emphasis on Waste Segregation and moving towards the practice of Zero Waste.
He said the Ministry has initiated angikaar, a 3 (three) month campaign that aims to mobilize PMAY (U) beneficiaries for social behavioural change, focusing on issues such as water & energy conservation, waste management, health, sanitation and hygiene converging with various Urban Missions and Schemes/Services through a series of IEC activities covering 12,389 beneficiaries which will culminate on the 10th December 2019.
CM Neiphiu Rio released the Anti Plastic Theme Song and the 100 Days Promotional Video along with distribution of Cloth bags to the tax paying households under Kohima Municipality.
Five Water ATMs were launched for public use. The Water ATMs are placed in strategic locations with the maximum foot fall with the sole intention of discouraging bottled drinking water. 11 ULB Sanitation Vehicles were flagged off for 11 Town Councils in the State.
Advisor Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Dr. Nicky Kire stated that under the “100 days Smart City Special Initiative Campaign on Sanitation” Kohima Smart City (KSC) in collaboration with the Green Team Kohima has taken awareness program on plastic pollution and waste management to numerous schools and colleges. KSC also held consultations with Apex Civil Societies including the business community.
100 days Challenge Award for the best Sanitation was awarded to Ward 11 PWD and 100 days Challenge Award for the best Eco Activity was given to Kros College Kohima.
Principal Secretary Urban Development & Municipal Affairs Department, Himato Zhimomi chaired the program. Ministers and elected Members, senior Officers, Ward and Colony Authorities and students attended the function.
