Kohima, July 22 (NEx): The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) has sanctioned a total amount of Rs. 67,26,000 under Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme (NVCS) 2012 for the year 2020 with regard to 29 cases.
The NSLSA informed that the scheme was introduced for the purpose of compensation to the victims or dependents who have suffered loss or injury as a result of crime and who require rehabilitation. The distribution to respective dependents or families of victims by District Legal Services Authorities started in the month of July
It also informed that, out of the 29 cases, 09 were victims of rape, 11 were loss of life, and 07 were sexual assault and physical abuse, and out of the total applications, 15 were minors. The compensation is awarded to the family member and dependents of the victims.
The NSLSA said that applicants can make an application before the Legal Services Authority of the state; attached with the FIR, medical reports, and the copy of judgment or recommendation if the case has been disposed. Similarly, 06 applications were recommended during the year by the Court; 18 were filed by claimants/ victims and 05 were from police, administration, organizations and others.
After scrutiny, the award given is done based on factors such as the gravity of the offence, loss of livelihood, in case of death their age, monthly income, number of dependents, whether the crime was an isolate incident or part of a series over a period of time. All the applications received were considered, the NSLSA informed.
Meanwhile, 08 compensations were said to be from Kohima district, 06 from Dimapur, 05 from Mokokchung, 05 from Mon and 01 each from Zunheboto, Tuensang and Phek District.
It maybe noted that there is no specific budget allocated for Victim Compensation. The Relief and Rehabilitation, Home Department accommodates according to the application received from NSLSA and DLSAs.
