Kohima, July 01: A 21 year old Naga lad, Ponachan Y Kikon, who is currently pursuing Automobile Engineering at Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu, Zunheboto builds a drone to participate in the Nagaland start-up lockdown challenge by Department of Industry and Commerce, Government of Nagaland. The motto was to develop solutions to solve problems during this pandemic.
Speaking to NagalandExpress, Ponachan said, he is personally interested in the field of automobiles and applying his knowledge during this pandemic crisis to combat the outbreak, he built a drone to deliver medicines/other essentials, which can be handy especially in sensitive places like COVID-19 Hospital or COVID-19 care centre.
Ponachan is the son of Y Yanbemo Lotha and Benthunglo Kikon of Wokha Town in Nagaland. He plans to continue studies after the diploma in Automobiles.
Further, he explained that his project is named “Project X”, which is an Octacopter drone with four wings, and has the capacity to carry weight upto 600 grams. The drone uses 3500 mAh lithium polymer battery, that can take the flight upto 15 minutes with half the weight capacity. Once it reach the destination, the drone automatically detaches the item it is carrying with a push of a button, ensuring the task without any contact.
Ponachan said that he started this project as a DIY project, out of curiosity with flying and got an opportunity to participate in the startup Nagaland lockdown challenge competition. The main components used in building the drone are- RC transmitter and receiver, BLDC motor, Esc, Propeller, Flight controller, Battery, Octacopter frame.
He also mentioned about his participation in NagaTech along with his classmates which was held for technical students in Nagaland last year. They built an ‘Electric Car’, which bagged the first runners up in the NagaTech.
Sharing on his inspirational thoughts, Ponachan said, we are all gifted in different ways and one day it will take us to our destination. I am also chasing my dreams, he added.
