Kohima, April 11 (NEx): Justice Songkhupchung Serto Judge, Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench and
Executive Chairman, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority inaugurated a Legal Aid Clinic at Oriental Theological College, Yangli, Tuensang on April 10th, 2021. The clinic opens for two days a week and is manned by a Para Legal Volunteer.
The inauguration took place in the presence of Principal Secretary, Justice and Law Department, Government of Nagaland Ramakhrishnan, IAS; NSLSA Member Secretary N Longshithung Ezung, NJS and Secretary, Law & Justice Department, Nino Iralu, NJS.
In his address, Serto noted that theological college should be a place where justice should be taught and the notion of justice should be spoken and disseminated to the public. Therefore, establishing a legal clinic here is rightly undertaken whereby justice becomes part of the curriculum and at the centre of law, he opined.
Dwelling on the notion of justice as surpassing the Court, the judge reminded the attendance of the importance and use of justice in the Bible numerous times and without which tranquility and peace are absent. He added that, law is ingrained in us for which it is our duty to protect, preserve and propagate the very essence of law. He further encouraged the students to read the books available in the legal clinic and share the knowledge with the community.
Meanwhile, Ramakhrishnan, IAS stated that in pursuing the wrong path, one fails to receive justice for which one needs guidance and help. As such, a legal clinic will cater to provide basic legal
knowledge and services while calling the public to make use of the facilities. He also thanked the Judge for capacitating his services beyond the courtroom and the member secretary for outreach to strategic areas.
Member Secretary N Longshithung Ezung, NJS said that the legal services provide free legal aid, awareness and education at the grassroot level and assist beneficiaries to avail the services at front offices of the DLSAs. Legal Clinics established in far reaching and interior areas both rural and urban cater to reach people at the grassroot. Therefore, he encouraged the people of the area and surrounding areas to take ownership of the clinic and utilize the services which has been established at an appropriate place.
Earlier, Secretary Tuensang DLSA Kumdilong Kessen, NJS gave an introduction and the programme was chaired by Antimangyang Chang, Retainer Lawyer, Tuensang DLSA, also, OTC students presented a special song.
