Peren, October 31 (NE): Kwakpwa Lamsimngyi Mini-Hornbill Festival was celebrated at Mt. Pauna Tourist Village Benreu on 31st October, 2019 with Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio as the special guest.
Lamsimngyi is one of the most popular Zeme festivals, which is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety, usually during the last part of October or early November. Lamsimngyi or Kwakpwa ngyi is a festival of rekindling of the loving relationship between parents and married daughters/sons families; between family of married niece and the chosen maternal uncle’s family; and games & sports competition for boys & youths are also conducted. On the first day, they cook the best delicacies and share between families called Kwakpwa & Hetamram.
In some villages, the Day belongs to the brides where they gather and enjoy the day for the last time before transitioning to a woman. Also, the women folk, according to their age, gather in groups and enjoy the day in each other’s company, while the men folk look after the household chores and take care of the children.
Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio in his speech highlights on the unique cultural diversity of the Nagas and encouraged the gathering to promote and preserve their own respective culture and tradition. Benreu being regarded as Tourist Village, Rio further urged the villagers to emphasis more on cleanliness.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the new tourist Log Huts. Earlier the inauguration programme was chaired by Dr. Lungsang Nsarangbe & Kebana Thou, welcome speech and key note address on Hut Inauguration was addressed by Deputy Commissioner Peren, Sentiwapang Aier while short speech was also delivered by Advisor for Tourism, H. Khehovi Yepthomi and vote of thanks was proposed by Kengim Kulimbe. Youths from Heningkunglwa, Mpai and Benreu village showcased different traditional games like Naga Wrestling, Hezwa (Long jump) and High jump (Heram).
