Joint Statement by CM Rio and LOP Zeliang on Naga Political Solution

A joint press statement by the Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio and Leader of Opposition, TR Zeliang on the present dialogue between the government of India and the participating Naga organizations was released on December 18, 2020

Kohima, December 19 (NEx): A joint press statement by the Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio and Leader of Opposition, TR Zeliang on the present dialogue between the government of India and the participating Naga organizations was released on December 18, 2020, for clarity and general understanding in the greater interests of peace and unity.

Both the leaders appreciated and welcomed the positive approach of the GOI under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah towards expediting the ongoing peace talks.

Earlier, at the initiative of the State government of Nagaland, a Consultative Meeting was held on October 15, 2020 at the State Banquet Hall, CMRC, Kohima in the presence of Naga Hohos, Mass based organizations, Civil societies, church organizations, political parties, NGOs and prominent individuals to discuss the Naga issues as well as the government of India and the participating Naga organizations where a seven point resolution was adopted.

The following seven points resolution were adopted in the meeting:

*The house appreciated Govt of India for recognizing the unique history of Nagas and making earnest efforts to find a political settlement to the Naga issue.

*The house acknowledged the sacrifices and contributions of the Naga People to promote and protect their interests.

*It also expressed gratitude to the civil societies and church for consistent support towards the Naga cause and making constant efforts towards reconciliation and unity among the Naga people.

*The house also affirmed its commitment to continuously work towards a political settlement based on the unique history and identity of the Naga People.

*It also urged the Naga organizations to honour and respect the covenant of reconciliation and maintain the sanctity of non-violence in letter and spirit for a shared Naga future as members of one Naga family.

*The house appealed the negotiating groups to come together under a spirit of oneness, mutual trust and understanding and strive with sincerity and commitment towards achieving a solution based pragmatic considerations.

*Also affirmed to relentlessly work in a collective and unified manner with one voice so as to facilitate the peace process and strengthen the peace talk for early realization of an acceptable, inclusive and honorable solution in a transparent manner.

Meanwhile, the joint statement said that the NPF’s initiative to organize a Consultative Meeting on September 14, 2020, at Rhododendron Hall, NAPTC, Chumukedima under the banner of Political Affairs Mission (PAM) was equally appreciated.

Also, the NPF party acknowledged the content and spirit of the resolution adopted at the Consultative meeting on October 15th, 2020 and has committed to actively support all initiatives towards resolution of the Naga Issue.

Both the Leaders in unison requested the government of India and the Naga organizations participating in the peace talk to arrive at an early solution which will bring lasting peace and prosperity to the people of the region.
