Kohima, January 04 (NEx): OSD to Govt. of Nagaland, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department Shri Johnny Ruangmei joint the IAF TEAM for damage assessment of Dzukou Valley forest fires on January 3rd, 2021.

He said that as per the assessment, the forest fires has been controlled 80-90%. Thanks to IAF and many other stakeholders such as para military, NDRF,SDRF, HG&CD, Police, SAYO, F&ES, DDMAs Kohima & Dimapur, Forest Dept and other volunteers for the ground level preventive measures. The operation may continue tomorrow to douse some of the minor fires on the hillocks. The Dzukou Valley portion is safe as witnessed from the air survey, he added.

Detailed report on Dzukou valley fire:

On December 29th, 2020, a report was received by the NSDMA about an incident of a Forest Fire at Dzukou Valley, under Kohima District, Nagaland.

Dzukou Valley is a relatively remote and inaccessible area of the State and given the terrain, high altitude and other factors, the emergency response operation is a challenge. Dzukou Valley is famous for its multicolored carpets of natural flowers and greeneries which make the hub of biodiversity, flora and fauna. Ecologically and environmentally, Dzukou Valley is a significant valley to the State and the North East region.

The following response mechanism was initiated by the NSDMA, Home Department, Government of Nagaland since the report was received about the forest fire incident at Dzukou Valley on December 29th, 2020.

The Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) were contacted through the
DDMA, Kohima and the DFO, Kohima.

The NSDMA, requisitioned IAF Chopper on December 29, 2020, and the requisition letter for IAF, Chopper was sent to the concerned by the Principle Secretary, Home, on December 30, 2020.

The deployment of IAF, chopper began on December 31st, 2020. However, due to the prevalence of strong winds on the mountain, IAF, Chopper could not carry out the operation, apart from the air survey conducted to assess the affected area.

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kohima requisitioned
personnel of Kohima District Executive Force (DEF), SDRF Kohima Unit, Home
Guards and Civil Defence, Police, Para- military and also Civil societies such as SAYO on December 30th, 2020.

The various uniformed personnel and SAYO youth executed a traditional fire control line to protect the more fragile part of Dzukou Valley. The SAYO volunteer has been camping since then to watch and supervise the situation. Also, various departments have been working towards the containment of the forest fire.

Currently, Dzukou valley situation as on January 1st, 2021:

SAYO volunteer, personnel of SDRF/Home Guard and Civil Defence, NDRF Kohima, Police and Para-military supported by DDMA, Kohima and DFO have made a traditional fire control line to protect the fragile portion of the valley.

IAF Chopper operation is underway and SAYO Volunteer is camping at the Valley to keep watch.

The fire at Dzukou Valley still prevailing with the condition to spread more wider depending on the wind direction. The Forest Fire is seen at multiple spots in different locations, reported the NSDMA.
