Kohima, May 20 (NE): Finally, an end to the long awaited testing laboratory in Nagaland, as the state is set to inaugurate its first COVID-19 test centre, bio-safety laboratory (BSL-3) at Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima (NHAK), tomorrow, May 20, 2020.

Taking to twitter, Nagaland Health Minister, S Pangnyu Phom said, ‘We are all set to inaugurate the long awaited BSL-3 Lab at NHAK, Kohima tomorrow at 11:00 hrs. We express our gratitude to all for supporting us to reach thus far’ – unquote.

A brief dedicatory program is scheduled to operationalise the BSL-3 Kohima at NHAK tomorrow at 11 am, which will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio, informed the Secretary, H&FW, Kesonyu Yhome.

Setting up the laboratory at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) and all relevant protocols were completed on May 12 and documents for validation were sent to the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and approval was received on May 14, 2020”, Principal Secretary, H&FW, Menukhol John informed.

Nagaland is setting up two labs for COVID-19 sample test, at Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima and Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research, Dimapur.

Kesonyu Yhome updating on the BSL-2 lab at Dimapur, said another COVID-19 testing, BSL- 2 lab to be set up at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences in Dimapur for which civil works are in progress.

With the BSL-3 in NHAK functional, all the seven Northeastern states now have facilities to test COVID-19 samples. Apart from Nagaland, six other Northeastern states, excluding Sikkim, have their own or Central government-run labs for testing Coronavirus.

The Kohima bench of the Gauhati High Court, following a writ petition, had earlier asked the Nagaland government to set up the COVID-19 sample testing laboratory in a specified time.

Till date, Nagaland has not reported any COVID-19 positive case. A total of 985 suspected COVID-19 samples were sent for testing from Nagaland as on 03:00 pm, May 20, 2020. 952 sample results came negative and 33 results were awaited.
