5th Nagaland Online Open Chess Tournament Concluded During Lock Down

Kohima, May 17 (NE): The Nagaland Chess Enthusiasts under the Nagaland Chess Association (NCA) successfully concluded the 5th Nagaland Online Chess Tournament on May 17, 2020 on Lichess application. The tournament was Sponsored by Mr. Toikhu Awomi (Former Vice President, NCA) and Mr. Khoveto Vero, Co-sponsord by Mr. Salhuto Nyekha.

Altogether, 48 players participated in the tournament. The Nagaland chess players from every corner of the state came to participate with the hope to learn more about the game and to stay indoors to help contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tournament result is divided into two categories : Open and under-16. In open category, 35 players competed with each other while in the Under-16 years Category, 13 young talented players competed in the online arena.

In this Tournament, two FIDE Rated players (FIDE: an international organization based in Switzerland that connects the various national chess federations and acts as the governing body of international chess competition) participated along with their sons which caught the attention of the chess community- Mr. Salhuto Nyekha F/o Jitihto Nyekha and Mengise Haikam F/o Akangzang Haikam.

Not only did they participated but they even stood in position along with their sons. Mr. Salhuto Nyekha 3rd position holder in the Open category and his son Jitihto Nyekha stood in 3rd position in the Under-16 category, while, Mengise Haikam stood in 9th position in the Open Category and his son Akangzang Haikam secured the 6th position in the Under -16 category.

Lucky prizes were also awarded to 5 players.

The Nagaland Chess Enthusiasts would be regularly conducting weekly tournament during the lockdown.
