Nagaland: According to reports, the militants first triggered an IED blast and resorted to indiscriminate firing at the convoy carrying the Assam Rifles personnel near Thanyak hydro project, between Tobu and Ukha villages. The AR personnel were coming from Tobu, towards Aboi in a 407 truck and Tata Xenon.
The AR troops also retaliated and the gunfight ensued for about an hour, sources said. Two AR personnel- a JCO and a rifleman died in the gunfight. Casualties on the other side have not been ascertained so far, sources added. The injured and the dead were airlifted from Monyakshu town. So far no group has claimed to have carried out the attack.
According to Indian Red Cross Society life member S Nyamnyei and P.N Wanmai, who were among those who rushed to the spot stated that the 407 Truck and a pick-up truck carrying jawans were first targeted with IED blast followed by heavy firing. The IED however missed the target, avoiding heavy casualties, IRCSN members stated. Police, district administration and village leaders also rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, security forces have launched a combing operation in the area.
Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister, Y. Patton have condemned the attack on Assam Rifles personnel by unidentified persons.
Rio took to twitter to condemn the incident, saying: “Reports of violence and attacks on security forces by unknown persons, in Mon district, is highly condemnable. I convey condolences to those who have been killed and wish speedy recovery for the injured. I further appeal for peace from all sections.”
