ZSUN seek Governor's intervention on illegal confinement of civilians by NSCN(U)

Peren, March 12 (NEx): The Zeliangrong Students’ Union (ZSUN), Nagaland through a memorandum seeks the intervention of the Governor of Nagaland Shri RN Ravi in the matter of two innocent men kept captive by NSCN(U) since March, 2nd, 2021. A peaceful protest rally against the illegal confinement is being held at Jalukie town, today.

The memorandum was submitted to Governor RN Ravi today, March 12th, 2021 by Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Nagaland, through the Deputy Commissioner of Peren.

The Students’ Union explains the chronology of events as follows:
On March 2nd, 2021 morning, two men hired an Autorickshaw and were on the way to Lamhainamdi Village, to clear the jungle and to construct the house for a lady by the name of Smti. Ilungumle of Jalukie town. The three of them (including the Auto driver) were abducted by the cadres of NSCN (U) and taken to their designated camp at Khehoi. The next day Lamhainamdi Village Council lodged FIR in the Police Station, Jalukie.

On March 3rd, 2021 the NSCN(U) summoned the President of Zeliang Baudi (N) under the Seal and signature of Col. Oponthung for negotiation of the crime allegedly caught red handed Of the three persons while cutting teak plantation. Falsely implicated and accused on the premises of fabricated lies, it said.

Also, the request of the families of captives to release them was turned down, and on March 9th, only the Auto driver was released through the Auto Driver Union’s intervention, the Union informed.

The ZSUN put forward their grievance stating that the NSCN(U) cadres are allowed to run a parallel government as they are defying the existing law enforcement mechanism dealing in such alleged crime, by openly showing contempt to the rule of law and adopting the posture of military junta. The cadres have committed on innocent daily wage earners’s physical and mental torture, subjected the families great miseries unlawfully and violated human rights, it said.

Further, it mentioned that summoning an Apex Body of a tribe for negotiation for a theft case is an Act of intimidation and browbeating with malafide intention, and also said that CSOs of Peren District on March 6th, 2021, requested the Chairman, Ceasefire Supervisory Board through the Deputy Commissioner, Peren to intervene and secure release of the captives as this is a clear case of violation of ceasefire ground rules by NSCN(U), but to no avail.

The Union demands that the abducted persons should be released unconditionally forthwith and financially compensated by the Government for illegal confinement of the three persons and hardships caused to the families as no tangible action was visible on the part of the State’s administration so far.

ZSUN cautioned that failing to meet the demands within 48 hours starting from 12 noon, March 12th, 2021, the Union reserve the rights to launch the next phase of protest, and thereafter for any eventuality, they shall not be held responsible, it said.
