Kohima, March 24 (NEx): Press Information Bureau (PIB) Kohima along with Field Outreach Bureau (FOB) Kohima under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting organised a webinar on Poshan Abhiyan on Wednesday, March 24th, 2021. The webinar drew huge response from Anganwadi workers across Nagaland, media persons and nursing students, a Press release from PIB Kohima said.
In his keynote address, S N Pradhan, ADG PIB North East Zone gave a brief outline of the mission and said that the Ministry of Women & Child Development is celebrating Poshan Pakhwada from March 16-31, 2021. Addressing Nutritional challenges through food forestry and organising Poshan panchayats are the key focus areas for the mission.
Poshan Abhiyan, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 8th, 2018, has reached a long way in ensuring wider people’s participation, Pradhan said adding a clarion call from the Prime Minister on various occasions in “Mann Ki Baat” further helped sensitize the masses on nutrition through Jan Andalon based mass public participation.
Speaking as the resource person, Soren Kikon, Joint Project Coordinator, Poshan Abhiyan, Nagaland Chapter said Poshan Abhiyaan is a multi-ministerial convergence mission with the vision to ensure attainment of malnutrition free India by 2022. It aims to ensure holistic development and adequate nutrition for pregnant women, lactating mothers and children.
Soren said the objectives of the mission was to prevent and reduce stunting, under nutrition in children in 0-6 years age group, prevent & reduce anemia among young children, women and adolescent girls in different age groups and reduce Low Birth Weight (LBW). All the 3,980 AnganWadi Workers were provided with smartphones for tracking of beneficiaries, Growth Monitoring Devices namely, Infantometer, Stadiometer, Weighing Scale (Infant), Weighing Scale (Mother & Infant), he said.
He added that the state and central level Dashboards monitor the activities of the frontline workers. Two AAAA+LS teams from the State won National Convergence Award at the National POSHAN Abhiyaan Awards 2019. Ten such teams were awarded State Level Convergence Award. Altogether 240 Nutri-Gardens have been developed in the state and all Anganwadi Centres will now have Nutri-Gardens, the release said.
Speaking on the topic “Child Nutrition” as resource person, Y C Chang, Consultant, Health & Nutrition said there has been visible improvement in the overall health status of women and children in the state. In the last ten years, the state has seen improvement in the coverage of some nutrition specific interventions such as care during pregnancy and delivery, post natal care for the children, exclusive and compulsory breast feeding, child vaccination, vitamin A supplementation & ante-natal care.
Infant Mortality Rate as per National Family Health Survey is reduced from 29.5 pc in NFHS-4 (2015-16) to 23.4 pc in NFHS-5 (2019-20), he added.
He however said much needs to be done as the state has seen increase in stunting and wasting in children in the last few years. Stating that malnutrition also occurs among persons in rich families due to intake of junk food, Chang further said focusing on nutri-gardens and sensitizing the people to eat healthy and nutritious food are essential.
In his welcome address, K Sonikumar Singh, Assistant Director, PIB Kohima thanked the Director of Social welfare Department K. Atoli Sema and Nursing School Kohima for partnering with the Ministry in organizing the awareness campaign for the key stakeholders. He said, PIB will look forward to collaborate with both the institutions for more meaningful discourse in the future.
