Biggest single-day spike with 5,242 COVID-19 cases reported in India in last 24 hours: Health Ministry

Kohima, May 18 (NE): India on Monday reported the biggest one day spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in a single day, a total of 5,242 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, said the Union health ministry data.

The jump in the cases comes on a day the government released guidelines for the fourth phase of the countrywide lockdown, which will continue till May 31.

A total of 157 persons succumbed to COVID-19 in India in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll due to COVID-19 in the country to 3029, according to the health ministry’s COVID-19 dashboard at 8 am.

Number of COVID-19 positive cases in India surges to 96,169, out of which, total 36,824 persons have been recovered / cured.

Maharashtra has reported highest number of COVID-19 positive cases in the country, with 33,053 cases and 1198 deaths, followed by Gujarat with 11,379 cases and 659 deaths and Tamil Nadu with 11,224 cases and 78 deaths.
